Le Centre communautaire | The Community Centre

Ce bâtiment a connu plusieurs vies. Construit en 1956, il abritait à l’origine l’école St. Patrick, sous la direction des Sœurs du Saint Rosaire. Des générations d’enfants catholiques y ont été scolarisés, dans le cadre d’un héritage qui a débuté en 1900 avec l’arrivée des sœurs. La réforme du système éducatif québécois dans les années 1990 a entraîné la fermeture de l’école, ainsi que celle de plusieurs autres écoles de la région, la communauté anglophone ayant été regroupée dans un système d’éducation laïque.

L’école est restée en suspens jusqu’en 1998, lorsqu’un comité s’est formé pour la convertir en centre communautaire. C’est ainsi qu’a commencé le processus qui a abouti au cœur vibrant d’interactions culturelles et communautaires que nous célébrons aujourd’hui. Tout au long de son existence en tant que centre communautaire, le bâtiment a accueilli des bibliothèques et une auberge, a été le centre de la Semaine irlandaise et héberge aujourd’hui plusieurs entreprises et organisations locales. De nombreux événements, ateliers et rassemblements divers y sont organisés chaque année.

This building has led several lives. Built in 1956, it was originally the St. Patrick School, under the direction of the Sisters of the Holy Rosary. Here, generations of Catholic children were taught, a heritage that began in 1900 when the Sisters first arrived. The reformation of Québec’s education system in the 1990s led to its closure, and that of several other schools in the area, as the English community was brought together under a secular education system.

The school sat in limbo, until 1998, when a committee formed to convert it into a community centre. Thus began the process that has led to the vibrant heart of cultural and communal interaction we celebrate today. Throughout its life as a Community Centre, the building has hosted libraries and a hostel, been the hub of Irish Week, and is now host to several local businesses and organizations. Numerous and diverse events, workshops, and gatherings are held here each year.
